About 20% of the US canine/feline population suffers from some form of allergies. Food hypersensitivity is the third most common cause of these allergies right behind atopic dermatitis and fleas, and, is the third most common cause of ear issues/ infections, allergic itching, scratching, licking and hot spots.
Also, animals can develop allergies to chicken, milk, eggs, fish, beef, pork, horse meat, grains, potatoes, soy products, or dietary additives. Alimentary allergens are almost exclusively proteins. We STRONGLY recommend that you cook for your pets, and use organic meats, with no poultry.
If you cannot cook, then you should try to buy foods that comply with strict safe food production standards. We recommend foods that have NO corn, meat meal, animal fat, meat by-products, milk by-products, poultry by-products, soybean meal, rice gluten, wheat mids, peanut hulls, wheat flour, wheat bran, rice flour, BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, artificial colors or flavors, or any other substandard, low-quality, by-product from human food processing. Foods with enhanced levels of EPA + DHA ( help with brain and eye development), glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate (for joint health in older pets and large breed dogs), pumpkin (a "Super Food" is a fantastic source of antioxidants), and live, naturally-occurring microorganisms and fiber are always best. However, supplements and vitamins have to be added when you cook or buy foods.

We can help you get an appropriate hypoallergenic diet for your pet after carefully reviewing the composition of the current diet as well as the symptoms presenting. Switching from one commercial food to another is not an adequate test, as these diets contain too many ingredients and the dog is likely to have eaten some of them in the past. Plus changing food has to be done gradually so as to not get diarrhea.
The test diet usually consists of a commercial hypoallergenic prescription diet such as salmon and rice or duck and potato. Once a good commercial hypoallergenic diet is found, the dog can be left on that diet indefinitely. A reduction in itching may occur within a few days of starting the test diet, but in many cases it takes several weeks. The test diet should be continued for at least 10 weeks. Once improvement is noted, various foods can be added one by one until the offending allergen is identified by noting that it causes an increase in the amount of itching and scratching.
As you know Cats and Dogs are different.
When cats have an allergy it is usually unpleasant physical reaction caused by their immune system overreacting to a food, something inhaled, or something in the cat's environment. Sometimes the immune system reacts to certain foods or substances such as pollens, powders, feathers, wool, house dust, and insect bites which trigger a reaction typified by itching and sometimes sneezing, coughing, swelling of the eyelids, tearing, or vomiting and diarrhea.
There are two kinds of hypersensitivity reactions. The immediate type occurs shortly after exposure and produces hives and itching. Hives in the cat are characterized by sudden swelling on the head, usually around the eyes and mouth, and occasionally the appearance of welts elsewhere on the body. The delayed reaction produces itching that occurs hours or days afterward. Flea bite dermatitis is an example of both types. This explains why a cat may continue to itch even after fleas have been removed from the cat and the environment.
Cats may become allergic to certain foods or substances in foods. The most common food allergens are chicken, fish, corn, wheat, and soy. Cats may also develop a food allergy to beef, pork, dairy products, or eggs. An intensely itchy rash often develops on the head, neck, and back, and may be accompanied by swollen eyelids. You may see hair loss and oozing sores from constant scratching. Sometimes, only the ears will be involved. In those cases, the ears will be very red and inflamed and may have a moist discharge. Less frequently, food allergy produces diarrhea or vomiting.
Diagnosis is made by feeding the cat a diet without the suspected food for at least four to six weeks. The next step is exposing the cat to a suspected allergen and then watching to see if a reaction follows. There are numerous hypoallergenic diets and foods we can suggest.
